Gay Rights

People have got it all wrong when they view those opposed to giving tax benefits to gays as a bunch of prejudice pigs. To clarify, let me give some insight as to why we are opposed to it. It has nothing to do with the fact that most christians are conservative. It has nothing to do with how gross it is. We all have to pay taxes, and one thing that the government has done to help families with children afford to keep their spouses as home if they should choose to do so is to give them a bit of a tax break. It's not a very fair move, however the government needs to do have some sort of a system to give back to the lower middle class or we will turn into an anarchal society. History shows that the people will revolt if the lower middle class are not taken care of in any way. Now a Gay couple should have the right to do what ever they want in the privacy of their rooms. Any law restricting such a thing would be very un-American. They do not, however, need tax cuts for their lifestyle. This would defeat the entire purpose. You cannot change what marriage is just to acheive equality, otherwise you have to do the same for every person who wants marriage to fit their desires. What happens when the crazy old lady with a 45 cats wants to marry the mother cat, and claim all the others as legal dependants? If we changed it for the Gays wouldn't we have to change the definition again for this lady out of equality? The other problem lies in the school system. In a society where there is very little competition against public schools, the government decides what is taught to our children unless you're rich enough to put your kids in a quality school. Once legislation takes action on something, the public schools teach it as fact. For example, it used to be illegal to teach anything that contradicted the bible, now that it's been changed, it's illegal to teach anything that supports the bible. If the government would adopt my plan for education and privatize schools, it wouldn't be such a problem. Since they'll never adopt my beautiful plan, our children will be taught in classrooms that it's ok to be gay, and that if they feel they might be gay that it's ok to act on those feelings. Whether or not this is true is not the issue, but it's taking that away from the parents of those children the rights to teach them. It is not the government's place to teach that to our children. Legalizing gay marriage or civil unions doesn't bring equality, but hurts everyone else.

Wherein is the right of the parent to teach his or her child their beliefs restricted? Even if a school teaches that homosexuality is OK, a parent can still teach their children otherwise. I was taught a few things that were contrary to things my parents and religion said and I came out OK.

Furthermore, marriage could easily be restricted only to those who have the legal ability to enter into a contract (which marriage is). Thus children could not marry adults or each other (without parental consent), people could not marry trees or cats or any other entity that has no legal authority to enter into a contract. The slippery slope argument in this case is found wanting.

Additionally, I think the solution of privatizing schools per your method would only exacerbate the problem. Non-controversial science is extremely subjective and could amount to a prohibition on any or all science since much of it challenges at least one belief or another. That would result in a child very poorly equipped to enter a world driven by technology, science, and critical thinking. It's hard to even begin to address the issue of school quality along socio-economic strata that will be further exacerbated by this, producing schools in poorer areas that cannot provide as quality an education as those in more affluent areas in addition to the logistical and bureaucratic in doling out all that money and seeing it isn't misappropriated. I think you're trying to over-simplify an incredibly and innately complex problem.

Ok you're right that the right of the parent is not taken away from this, but it is definitely compromised when you tell your kid one thing and then the government oversteps it's boundaries and tells it another on contreversial issues. It's not the government's place, and privatizing education would allow for schools to teach whatever they want and the parents would decide which school teaches the things they want their children learning. Now you say it would create a bigger problem, but you don't elaborate. Please tell me what "greater problem" would arise from putting more into the hands of citizens and less control from the government? You also say that "marriage could easily restricted only to those who have the legal ability to enter into a contract". Seriously, have you learned nothing from our nation's recent history? Our leaders bailout a company to ensure jobs, and what happens? Now everybody wants their bailout and things HAVE gotten out of hand. You put in parenthesis "What marriage is", well let me tell you what marriage IS: Marriage is a union between one man and one woman, and yes both parties must be able to enter this contract. They're not asking to be treated as equals, because they too can marry the same way we do. What they want is a tax break, and I'm sorry but this defeats the purpose of the tax break which was to help families with children. Back to my point I was making, they don't want equal rights, they want to change what marriage is so as to fit their wants. You cannot easily restrict who can enter this union once you have changed it for one group. Everyone else will demand we change it to fit their wants, and it WILL get out of hand. If you don't see this, you're ignorant. Now you're right that the situation is complex, but that's exactly why it's not the governments job to teach these things to our children. If education were subsidized, but left to the private sector, there would be no restrictions on what they teach. It's called Liberty. That's what is so beautiful about my plan is that a very complicated problem would no longer be the problem of the government's (Who seems incapable of managing anything".
